Population Demographics

Newport News has a 2025 estimated population of 181,702, representing a -2.44% decline from 2020 to 2025. The city exhibits significant racial diversity, with 43.44% Black or African American (78,929 residents), 37.50% White (68,130), 3.39% Asian (6,163), and 9.59% identifying as two or more races (17,420). The Hispanic/Latino population comprises 11.57% (21,015).

The median age is 34.2 years (2023), making Newport News younger than the state average. Approximately 22.66% of residents are under 18, while 15.31% are 65 or older. The 25-34 age group represents the largest cohort at 15.64% of the population.

Economic Indicators

The median household income in Newport News was $38,090 (2023). The unemployment rate stood at 4.6% as of August 2025, slightly higher than Virginia’s statewide rate of 3.6%. The Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News metropolitan area reached approximately 4.3 million total employment as of July 2025.

Marital status data shows 40.21% of residents age 15+ have never married, 36.48% are married with spouse present, and 11.49% are divorced.

Crime Rates

Newport News has experienced significant crime reduction in recent years. In 2024, the city saw the most substantial decrease in homicides and non-fatal shootings in over a decade. According to crime statistics, residents face a 1 in 113 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime and 1 in 7 chance for property crime. However, Newport News and Portsmouth continue to have some of the highest crime rates in Virginia compared to other cities.
